Hawkwind were actually one of the first bands to hit on the idea of beating the bootleggers by releasing their own live tapes. This series of CDs were actually released originally on cassette in the eighties, hence the title of the series The Weird Tapes. Of course many in the industry would find the idea of Dave Brock as being a trendsetter and at the cutting edge preposterous but the truth is that although there are many bands now selling their own official bootlegs through their respective websites Dave Brock and his merry men were there first. All of the recordings are previously commercially unreleased recordings from the Hawkwind and Dave Brock archives and all of them are of excellent quality which is more than can be said for the glut of Hawkwind bootlegs that started to appear in the early to mid eighties. This series therefore will be welcomed by the huge audience that Hawkwind still command and also prove of interest to newer fans that are curious about the bands past.

Volume eight is the final volume in this popular and successful series of recordings. This album covers two important eras. The first covers the pre Hawkwind era and features the earliest recordings made by Dave Brock during his busking days in 1966. While the recordings may be rough the quality is certainly there and these recordings fill in the gap at the very dawn of Hawkwind which was a time that still found Dave Brock performing on London’s streets as a busker.

The second era covered is the era following the massively successful hit single Silver Machine. These recordings date from 1973 when Hawkwind were amongst the biggest rock bands in the UK with the Space Ritual album about to catapult the band into the big time and assure the band of their place in musical history. All the recordings contained on this CD have been re mastered by Dave Brock for release.
Reviews

"The album starts with a magnificent live version of the track "Space Is Deep" that was recorded during the Space Ritual tour. This is one my favourites among the Hawkwind songs, so I really like very much also this, excellent sounding version! Then follows three tracks that have never been released anywhere else...A very nice trip!...All in all, this album has some extraordinary and brilliant samples of the early daze of the best band in the universe and it should naturally be part of any Hawkfan's collection. Voiceprint will also soon release four CD's from the Robert Calvert estate…"
