Brian Hopper has been an integral member of the legendary Canterbury Scene since that musical genre came into being. Initially Brian was a founder member of the Wilde Flowers a band that are seen as the cornerstone for the whole Canterbury Scene and which featured future members of Soft Machine (Hugh Hopper, Robert Wyatt and Kevin Ayers) and Caravan (Pye Hastings, Dave Sinclair, Richard Sinclair and Richard Coughlan). Brian was also briefly a member of the Soft Machine himself and despite being asked by Robert Wyatt to become a full time member of the band Brian declined and decided to continue with his studies in Ecology and Behaviour and his full time job in agricultural research. Over the years however Brian has been responsible for restoring a number of live archive Soft Machine albums for release the most recent example being Somewhere In Soho; a recording, which captures the band in residency at a club in London in early 1970. Brian has also over recent years become more involved in writing and recording his own music and as well as working on the Soft Machine archive recordings and another archive recording from Beggars Farm. He has also recorded an album with Robert Fenner called Virtuality. All of the above albums are available through Voiceprint.

Brian's latest album If Ever I Am originally grew out of Brian’s idea to involve the various members of legendary Canterbury Scene band The Wilde Flowers in the re recording of some of the Wilde Flowers material using modern recording techniques and instrumentation. Unfortunately as attractive as the idea looked and may have sounded it was a project that was to prove ultimately un workable. If Ever I am however is a fine album that has its roots in the revered Canterbury scene and its sights on perhaps wider pastures. The album is an eclectic mix of jazz and progressive rock and features performances from at least two other members of the Wilde Flowers in Brian's brother Hugh Hopper and also Robert Wyatt. Brian's other musical partner Robert Fenner is also featured throughout on guitar. If Ever I am is of course aimed at the huge cult following that the Canterbury Scene attracts but the album will also be of interest to lovers of finely crafted jazz tinged progressive rock.
