Snowy White
Live From London

British born guitarist Snowy White (born Terence Charles White) first became interested in music at the age of eleven when he was inspired by blues musicians Buddy Guy and B.B. King. He pursued his blues style in a number of bands however during the seventies Snowy made a reputation for himself playing numerous sessions for a wide variety of musicians such as Al Stewart, Cliff Richard and Peter Green appearing on Peters' comeback album In The Skies in 1979. More famously Snowy toured as second guitarist with Pink Floyd augmenting the bands sound on the tours to promote the Animals and The Wall albums. By late 1979 however, tiring of the session scene, Snowy accepted the offer to join the rock band Thin Lizzy. Snowy recorded two albums with Thin Lizzy (Chinatown and Renegade) and completed a number of successful tours before deciding that the bands' music, and more importantly their lifestyle, wasn't to his taste.

Snowy formed his own band featuring drummer Richard Bailey and bassist Kuma Harada. With this band he recorded his first solo album entitled White Flames. A single lifted from that album (Bird Of Paradise) became a surprise hit reaching the British top ten in early 1983. Snowy White also enjoyed a smaller hit at the end of 1985 with the more pop influenced song For You.

From here Snowy White recorded a number of blues based albums all of which were warmly received by the blues audience his records are aimed at.

His latest album The Way It Is, released in late 2004, retains that blues feel and contains performances from his latest band which features drummer Juan Van Emmerloot and bassist Walter Latapeirissa.

The album also features contributions from former Jeff Beck Group keyboardist Max Middleton. Who keyboardist John 'Rabbit' Bundrick also appears on a number of tracks including a brand new recording of Snowys' hit single Bird Of Paradise which was recorded in 2003. Snowy also raises a tip of the hat to another of his influences Peter Green with a cover of Fleetwood Macs' Black Magic Woman.

This DVD was filmed in London during the mid eighties and captures Snowy White and his band at the Camden Palace performing their brand of contemporary blues in front of a large and appreciative audience. Whilst Snowy White perhaps shuns the tag 'guitar hero' it can't be ignored that he is certainly one of the most tasteful guitarists currently playing the live circuit as the performance captured on this DVD proves.

Reviews

Fellow reviewer Maurice was so kind to review the four most progressive rock concerts released in the “Live From London” series. But fortunatelly two other DVD’s are released which are certainly worth while watching. I know that not everything on it can be considered as progressive rock music. The first is a concert done by Paul DiAnno and his band Di’Anno. Maybe some people do know that Paul used to be the original singer in Iron Maiden and released two albums with them. After his departure he formed his own band and released their self titled debut album in 1984. An album which sounded very different compared to the music made by his former band. The music could be discribed as AOR and moved more into the direction of a band such as Magnum. Several tracks from this fine album weee played  during their performance at the Camden Palace Theatre in London. Songs such as “Road rat”, “Heartuser” and “Razor age”. But also covers were done from The Kinks and The Animals. The melodic playing of keyboard player Mark Venables and the two guitarists Lee Slater and P.J.Ward makes the music which we hear one hour long very enjoyable. Unfortunatelly the band only released one album and split up. Paul formed other bands such as Battlezone and Killers making music which came closer to the spirit of Iron Maiden. The second DVD contains music from a great guitarist. Most people know him from his work with bands such as Pink Floyd and Thin Lizzy. His name is Terence Charles White. Better known as Snowy White. He released a great album with “White Flame” which also contained his hit “Bird of paradise”. A song with a lot of prog influences. The same song was also played at the Camden show. But the album has more songs with elements of great prog music and thank God some of them can also be enjoyed on this DVD. Good examples are “Journey” and “Answer”. Other influences which we can find in Snowy’s music are elements of blues, latin and jazz rock. All of them can be heard on this disc and are perfectly played by his backing band. Leading role’s are for Godfrey Wang (keys) and Richard Bailey (drums). All of the mentioned DVD’s are worth watching and contain a photo gallery from the same concert. They also show that the eighties were more than great neo progressive rock music. Both *** (Henri Strik)
