Bill Bruford’s name is synonymous with state-of-the-art drumming and percussion, and is famously associated with several of the greatest progressive rock groups of all time – Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, and UK. He also managed to notch up sessions with Gong, Roy Harper, Pavlov’s Dog, and National Health among many others in the first half of a distinguished 41 year career. But it is as a solo artist and leader that he really had room to stretch and develop as an all-rounder. Between 1978 and 1986 Bill recorded a number of  albums as both a leader of his band Bruford, and in a duo with keyboardist Patrick Moraz. Winterfold Records was founded in 2004 to document his extensive solo career in rock, and all the albums recorded during this period have been re-mastered and reissued on the label.

This CD is a collection of thirteen of the best tracks from across six Winterfold albums and includes material drawn from the albums Feels Good To Me (Seems Like A Lifetime Ago Parts 1&2, Sample And Hold), One Of A Kind (Hell’s Bells), Gradually Going Tornado (Age Of Information, Sliding Door), Bruford/Moraz (Flags, Blue Brains).

Still on the electric rock side of a transition to acoustic jazz, the Winterfold Collection would act as an excellent introduction to the first half of the exciting career of one of the most influential drummers of the last 4 decades.

Reviews
'Many of the best numbers from the six albums Bruford released in this vein are included here...It is Bruford's vision and discipline which moulds this willful group of talents into a unuquely elegant musical shape.'
David Sinclair ' Classic Rock' May 2009
"The two sides of Bill Bruford's solo output are represented on these discs. The first one represents his rock side, thirteen wonderful tracks taken from earlier pre Earthworks albums, including lots of tracks from Bruford and with Patrick Moraz including Sample and Hold, Hells Bells, Blue Brains, and others. There's some great playing of course and with superb musicians like Allan Holdsworth, dave Stewart, and Jeff Berlin on board you'd expect that. There's already a heavy jazz tinge to the music, but when we reach the summerfold collection then Jazz is well and truly on the menu. This double disc collection includes materials with Earthworks in all its line-ups, work with Michael Borstlap,Ralph Towner, and what have you. Again there's some magnificent playing from the likes of Tim Garland, Django Bates, Iain Bellamy and everyone else. As a retrospective look at Bill's career these are excellent staring points from the uninitiated. Many others will already have much that's here, but a condensed selection is still worth having. One thing is certain though Bill Bruford is one of the most inventive and imaginative drummers in either Jazz or Rock, and it's to hoped that you've already seen him play live as he retired from live perfomance early this year."
