Ready To Go Home Aside from Geoff Downes contribution to Asia he also finds time to record and release occasional solo albums. Shadows and Reflections is the latest in a long line of solo work that has a devoted audience waiting or each release. The Bridge is a previously unreleased studio recording from Geoffrey Downes that will certainly be familiar to long time fans of his music. The piece was originally performed at an exclusive live performance from Geoff which also featured the premiere of The Bridge but also selected works form Geoff’s illustrious past including music from The Buggles, Yes and of course Asia. The live album was then released on a very limited basis to the Asia Fan Club in 2004. The Bridge will be the first new solo studio album from Geoff Downes since Shadows And Reflections and with Asia having just finished a successful European tour at the end of 2005 Geoff’s profile is high. The Bridge will come in a jewel box featuring exclusive and specially commissioned art work. Initial copies (1,000) will also come with a bonus in the shape of the live performance of the Bridge that was previously only available through the Asia fan club and is no longer available which will no doubt prompt the devoted fan base to snap up the initial run of this album. Reviews REVIEW FROM FEEDBACK ISSUE 87, MAY 2006 "...new release from Blueprint which has a limited pressing of 1000 copies so I would have thought that this would sell out pretty quickly." At the moment Geoff Downes has only time left for his big love Asia. We all know that he has reunited the original line –up of this band. Almost at the same when he fired his latest line –up he released a rather strong new solo album. This album did he call “The Bridge”. The album starts with a studio version of this track which he recorded three years ago. The song is 22 minutes long and features strong keyboard orientated instrumental prog music. Sometimes mellow and relaxing played on string synthesizers and Kawai Grand Piano’s. Sometimes fast with programmed computer beats. But always with melodic synthesizer solo’s. It still shows that Geoff can write great prog tunes and at the same time perform electronic soundscapes. That same year he also did a live performance of “The bridge” at St. Cyprian’s Parish Church in London. Dallas Simpson made a live binaural recording of the event. This live version of “The bridge” is featured on this new solo album together with a “Historic Medley”. This medley has all kinds of well known tunes which he wrote as a performing artist with The Buggles, Yes and Asia. A half hour long we can recognize fragments of “Video killed the radio stars”, “Tempust fugit”, “Man in a white car”, “Only time will tell”, “Cutting it fine”, “Aqua”, “Ready to go home” and “Free”. All very well done and it shows that he is a very strong musician who can entertain a crowd on his own. Although on his own. One thing certainly puzzles me. During the Asia song “Only time will tell” we can hear the lead vocals of John Payne. The man who replaced John Wetton on bass and vocals. He is mentioned at the thank you section but it becomes not very clear if he was at the Parish Church in London during the concert. But sometimes it’s better to keep it a mystery. One thing is certain that “The Bridge” is a fine album for everybody who likes the keyboard playing of Mr. Downes. Prog fans and Electronic music fans are all included. ***+ (Henri Strik) | |
