Pre-Med are a decidedly Space Rock band. The band was put together in 2004 by Danny Faulkner with help from Hawkwind bassist Alan Davey. The other main member of the band is guitarist Lewis Turner although he has since left the band. The bands debut release Medication Time was well received on its release in 2006 and also featured guest appearances form Danny Thompson and former Landmarq keyboardist Steve Leigh. Danny’s brother Martin also contributed to some of the lyrics on Medication Time The truth About Us is the follow up to that well received album and again features material.

For The Truth About Us the band now features the guitar talents of Eamon O’Neill.

Guests this time round include poet Martin Faulkner (Danny’s brother) who has contributed all lyrics, Hawkind’s Jason Stuart who appears on one track, “Death Of A Star” and once more Steve Leigh plays keyboards who makes his presence felt on “Has The Whole World Gone Insane”

Musically, the album promises to be a natural progression from Medication Time. Starting off with a 3 track onslaught of mind blowing Space Rock. The album then takes the listener on a musical journey leading them through the realms of hypnotic instrumentals, classical ballads featuring piano, strings and lush swirling synths which will take you to another dimension. To cap it all the band also include their first ever cover version, the Hawkwind classic, The Demented Man.

Once again all production and mixing duties have been handled by Alan Davey and final mixing by Paul Cobbold.  The album comes in eye catching artwork by Kevin M Sommers.

Reviews

The Truth About Us is the second CD by the new UK based space rock band Pre-med formed by Danny Faulkner (vocals, drums, keyboards) and ex-Hawkwind member Alan Davey (bass, keyboards, rhythm guitar on a few tracks). The album features some guests, as well. This is also one of the best heavy, psychedelic space rock albums that I’ve heard for some time now! All the tracks are written by Danny except of course the cover version of Hawkwind’s “The Demented Man”.

The album starts off with the hard-rocking “Cerebral Escape”, and especially the vocals remind me of the old Hawkwind classic “Brainbox Pollution”. There’s a sequence-driven break in the middle, then the heavy rocking starts again with a guitar solo. This is a very Alan Davey/Hawkwind-styled track and I love it!

“Wallpaper Warriors” has a very heavy killer riff and the keyboards and lyrics enhance the oriental feel of the track. Another excellent track with sequencers and a great guitar solo. “The Crowning of the Acid King” is good, solid basic space rock until just before the four-minute-marker when the totally amazing part begins.

“5HTP” begins with a dark synth thing and the drums join in after one and a half minutes. This is a great, a bit mellower instrumental track that gets really psychedelic.”Death of A Star” is a marvelous, floating space ballad that sounds a bit like “Green Finned Demon” by Hawkwind. The chorus is just amazing with Jason Stuart (Hawkwind) on piano. Jason also plays the superb, a bit jazzy synthesizer solo. My two-year-old daughter really liked this one and wanted to hear it again: first time this has ever happened!

”The Truth About Us” has some synthesizer at first as well as melancholic vocals. I really like Danny’s emotional but strong voice, by the way. After one minute the tracks starts to roll and it has a really great feel to it. It’s sad, but it rocks and also includes some space sounds and spoken samples. Possibly the best track on the album!

Then we’ll get a superb version of Hawkwind’s “The Demented Man” that carefully preserves the original, fragile and melancholic atmosphere but at the same time brings the track to the 21st century. I just love this number! “Has the Whole World Gone Insane” is a heavier space rocker with pounding bass lines and melancholic vocals and I like this one very much too. Steve Leigh plays the excellent synthesizer solo.

The album ends with the beautiful ballad “Debouch” that has a hazy synth intro, effected keyboard pattern and melancholic vocals. In summary, The Truth About Us is totally amazing album full of strong, heavy and emotional space rock and Alan Davey has done a great job with mixing, producing and engineering as the sound quality is excellent. Just get this album!

"What a killer album!  The Truth About Us is jam packed with lush swirling synths, hypnotic instrumentals, and classic Hawkwind-like ballads that remind me of Hawkwind's Warrior At The Edge of Time.  In fact, Pre-Med includes a cover of Dave Brock's eerie "The Demented Man" from that same album, breathing new life and energy into the song.  In fact, the whole disc is a melodic version of this classic space rock band, and may acutally surpass the master!  There are no weak tracks on this disc and The Truth About Us is truly one of the best new releases I have heard in the pasty year.  I highly recommend this CD to all past, present, and future Hawkwind fans."
