Bonus Track: Batucada Swiss born Patrick Moraz is probably best known in rock circles as the keyboard player in two of the world’s biggest rock bands Patrick was a member of Yes recording the album Relayer and touring extensively with the band between 1974 and 1976.The second major band Patrick was a member of was the Moody Blues. Patrick stayed with the band between the years 1978 and 1991 touring the world extensively and contributing to a number of successful albums. Patrick has also been a member of the progressive rock band Mainhorse forming the band with bassist Jean Ristori in 1969 and releasing one self titled album in 1970. Following that his next port of call would be Refugee where he joined forces with two former members of the Nice. This band also released one critically acclaimed album the self titled Refugee before Patrick left to join Yes. Patrick’s career however would it seem be pre ordained. As a child Patrick would have been considered a musical prodigy and whilst he became adept at a number of instruments it was the piano where Patrick excelled to the extent that he was named “Best Young Soloist” at the prestigious Zurich Jazz festival in 1961. Similar awards came Patrick’s way in 1963 and 1965 which led him to performing with some of the great jazz artists of the time including the legendary John Coltrane at various European jazz festivals. By the time of the release Patrick’s debut solo album in early 1976 Patrick was firmly installed as the keyboard player in Yes. Following the release of Relayer all the members of Yes embarked on solo projects thus ensuring that The Story Of I received maximum coverage in the music press. Following the release of this album Patrick returned to touring duties with Yes before leaving during the sessions for the follow up album to Relayer. Patrick then released his second solo album in 1977(Out In The Sun) before joining with the Moody Blues a partnership that lasted until 1991. During this time and beyond Patrick has recorded and released a number of solo and collaborative albums including works with another former member of Yes drummer Bill Bruford. In late 2005 Patrick signed a new distribution deal with Voiceprint which will oversee the release of his entire back catalogue of solo albums and also include albums from Mainhorse and Refugee. Out In The Sun is Patrick’s second solo album and comes from 1977. It was recorded in Switzerland and Brazil and was recorded shortly after Patrick left Yes. As with The Story Of I the album has a very percussive feel throughout although the album is made up of eight individual pieces rather than the thematic piece that was The Story Of I. Featured tracks include Out In The Sun, Tentacles, Kabal and Silver Screen. As with the other solo albums in this series of re issues Patrick Moraz has personally overseen the re mastering of this album. Reviews After the succes of his first solo album ("The Story Of I") it was obvious that Patrick Moraz recorded a second solo album which would contain the same kind of music. Only this time he was no longer a member of Yes. They had decided to continue without him and to work again with Rick Wakeman. It was for Partick a relief to record "Out In The Sun" after the turmoil he had been through when leaving Yes. That's mainly also the reason that the it became a very happy and light hearted album. He again used a lot of the same musicians as he had used for "The Story Of I". That's probably also the reason that this album is almost of the same high level. Musicwise it also moves a lot into the same direction. The Brazilian influences are again present and again we can enjoy his fantastic playing on the Mini Moog. Lead singer John McBurnie has this time an even bigger role. I wonder what did happend to this great singer. The reissue of Patrick's second album has also one extra bonus track. It has the title "Batucada XXX". The track again features the Brazilian percussionists. Mr Moraz himself touches the electric piano and plays a happy jazzy tune. This time I can not call the album a true masterpiece but it is certainly of a very high level. I would say that it just stays in the shadow of his debut album. Maybe a bit strange for an album which has the title "Out In The Sun". **** (Henri Strik) | |
