What Was I Thinking Before I Was Thinking? 11. The Great Departure Shaun T. Hunter releases a trilogy of albums on Local Nobody Records. Three albums, four seasons, one concept. . . 'Flying Not Falling' embracing the lilting advent of Spring, renewed with the optimism and vigour of new beginnings... 'The Great Departure' a gently confrontational, questioning record, coupled with a barren, icy production evident of autumnul contemplation seeping into glacial winter emotions...'Circles' moving between the seasons it primarily basks in the reflective yet reassuring afterglow of the sweetest summer... The trilogy of albums first manifested and became 'a calling' in Hunters mind in the Spring of '04 when the first chapter of the trilogy 'Flying not Falling' came to light. This was completed in Nov of that year...described as a record 'so mesmerisingly beautiful and so richly seeped in genuine emotion yet one that still manages to sound uplifting and positive is nothing short of miraculous. A sublimely beautiful album and a profoundly moving experience. timeless....' 18 months later both 'The Great Departure' and 'Circles' were finished. 'Sitting' alongside the critically acclaimed 'Flying Not Falling' (borders album of the month Feb '05, though not officially released due to the trilogy being completed). 'The Great Departure' is primarily a dark, elegant and brooding collection and is a leaner record than its predecessor due to the subtle recreation of a live performance aided by much use of 'world' percussion, this resulted in a thick, raw and vibrant concept. The album tends to groove a little more whilst still staying true to its acoustic spine...' If you are one of life's fortuitous people you will hear an album which has a profound effect on your life, 'The Great Departure' is such a CD. To listen to these songs either in a room with subtle lighting or with your eyes closed takes you to a higher conciousness, where you find, or touch, your own personal god, spirit or destiny...' along with the first chapter 'Flying Not Falling' it was acknowledged that these records were sometimes euphoric, sometimes haunting but that Shauns work was nothing short of captivating.
'Circles' comes full circle embodying themes and production evident on the first two albums, though also drifts away on a warm melodic, loose acoustic breeze tilting its musical head towards influences 'laced' with a fusion of soul, gospel and blues. as the final chapter of the trilogy, 'Circles' continues in the vein of being an unashamedly soul searching spiritual record...what is evident with the trilogy is that this is a writer whose darkest moments still resonate with hope, love and clarity.
