The DVD has been upgraded in both picture quality and sound quality and will also boast almost an hour's worth of extra previously unseen footage along with the normal extras found on current DVD releases such as a photo gallery and discography. This otherwise long deleted video will be welcomed by the bands large and loyal following and due to the scarcity of the original video will be a eagerly sought out. Reviews A first release of “The Eye Of The Eagle” already appeared in 1999. It could be enjoyed on CD and video. Now seven years later we have finally a world premier on DVD. On this DVD we can watch the performance of a piece of music which was based on the book “The Eye Of The Eagle” written by David Adam. Dave Fitzgerald (saxes, flutes and whistles) did read this book and found that he could do something with the concept and lyrics. This former member of Iona asked his friend and co-founder of Iona Dave Bainbridge (guitars and keyboards) if he was interested to translate this book into a musical concept. Right from the start did he agree and together did they write music which certainly has elements which can be found on the early Iona albums. The music is very mellow and has a lot of Celtic influences. You might even call the whole piece a Celtic Symphony. The performance shot at St Edmundsbury Cathedral was done with several guest musicians. Three backing singers, one keyboard player and one Church organ player were used. They even included a real Boys Choir and a narrator. To make the performance not too static they included several interviews inbetween the recordings. Also the images shot in and outside the Cathedral gives the concert something extra. Besides the whole performance of “The Eye Of The Eagle”, which is devided into eleven Chapters, we can enjoy on this disc a special feature section. It includes the encore, a reprise version of “Open my eyes”, and several interviews with David Fitzgerald, Dave Bainbridge and David Adam. People who love the early Iona albums must certainly watch this DVD. The more mellow and ambient parts on those albums come very close to the style of music on this DVD. It certainly brought me for a moment back to the early nineties. It were the days when I discovered the beautiful music of Iona. *** (Henri Strik) | |
