Fohat Digs Holes in Space - Daevid Allen/Gilli Smyth 11. Love Makes Sweet Music - Kevin Ayers There are many interesting and exciting bands that Daevid has played in during his musical career, and University Of Errors is certainly one of them. U of E first came about when Pat Thomas and Michael Clare arranged a jam session as a way to spend the night with Daevid Allen before he left San Francisco for Australia. It was never meant to be anything more than a pleasant way of spending a few hours improvising. Fate took a hand and the band grew and mutated with the addition of Josh Pollock, Jay Radford and Erik Pearson. The band went on to record their first album entitled ‘Money Doesn’t Make It’ which was released in America. This DVD, recorded live at the Gong UNCON in November 2006, features a number of songs performed by the University Of Errors that covers that Soft Machine era. This album will be of interest to the large and dedicated Daevid Allen and Gong audience and also through historic connection to the fans of Soft Machine and the Canterbury Scene as a whole. The performance was professionally filmed using five HD cameras and 48 track audio. Audio mixing and editing and the classy Cubist Video Edit was done by Harry Williamson at his Melbourne Studio with Daevid and Michael Claire contributing artistic and cultural detail. All the wild effects were carefully planned and executed with meticulous precision. The result is not just another concert video. It is a WORK OF ART in its own right. You need to own it! Reviews "Daevid Allen must be best known as the founder of Gong but he was also one of the founding members of The Soft Machine. Unfortunately he was not able to stay in that band for very long since his returning to England from The Soft Machine’s tour in France was denied. Apparently Allen hasn’t been satisfied with the existing recordings since he had to record his guitar parts hastily. So it must have been wonderful to work again on those 60’s psychedelic rock/pop treasures with Allen’s American band University of Errors, a group that was formed by accident ten years ago. I must say that I prefer these tracks to the later The Soft Machine material, although there are some excellent moments in there too, of course. This DVD was recorded at the Gong Family Unconventional Gathering at Melkweg, Amsterdam in 2006. The University of Errors gig was on the third and last day of the Uncon and surely one of the most anticipated performances. And not without a cause, since the band managed to get an unbelievable charge to tracks like ”That’s How Much I love You”, ”Save Yourself”, ”She’s Gone”, ”You Don’t Remember”, ”You Should Have Known” etc. The gig was shot professionally with five HD cameras and recorded with 48 tracks and works superbly in every aspect. The visual side of things is well taken care of and Harry Williamson’s production and the nice, Cubistic extra effects are very successful, as well. In addition to The Soft Machine material the disc also includes a very rocking version of Allen’s master piece ”Stoned Innocent Frankenstein” that changes directly into a really psychedelic, spacey and floating version of the great and hypnotic Gong track ”Fohat Digs Holes in Space” that features Nicoletta Stephans on theremin. The gig ends with The Soft Machine’s first single “Love Makes Sweet Music” that was originally released a month before Pink Floyd’s “Arnold Layne”. Also included is a six-page booklet with for example interesting, informative and funny liner notes by Steve Lake. What an excellent DVD...!" DJ Astro, Psychotropic Zone | |
