Totalational Farewell to the Innocents Gong Acid Mothers was the latest chapter in the seemingly endless regenerating story of Gong. Gong first began kicking up a storm in the late sixties when former Soft Machine guitarist Daevid Allen was refused admission back into the UK following a European tour with Soft Machine. Undeterred Daevid and is partner Gilli Smyth headed for France where the seeds of Gong were first planted. Surrounding themselves with many talented musicians Gong continued through the seventies and beyond. Daevid and Gilli left Gong in the mid sixties to pursue their own musical projects, sometimes together and sometimes apart. When Gong finally reconstituted itself in 1988 Daevid Allen once again found himself at the head of the family Gong. Gong pursued their musical goals for a further thirteen years. Following a concert with Gong at the end of 2001 In Blackburn of all places Daevid Allen caught site of a Gong poster advertising the concert alongside a poster advertising a performance of the ballet Swan Lake. It set Daevid thinking and changes were afoot within Gong. It was this particular incident coupled with Daevid receiving a love letter that convinced him that perhaps it was time to once again shed the skin and move onto the next phase of Gong, which would turn out to be Gong Acid Mothers which would see collaboration between Gong and the band Acid Mothers Temple. The collaboration proved a fruitful one and a well received album was released in late 2003. Following this plans were drawn up for a world tour. However due to the economical situation in many parts of the world only the Japanese dates were able to be completed meaning many Gong fans unfortunately missed this unique performance. This recording is the complete show taken from the concert performed in Tokyo Japan in early 2004 and as this tour only visited Japan many fans worldwide will now be able to hear what they missed from the Gong Acid Mothers live show. | |
