Syd Barrett was the main mentor of the space sound that Pink Floyd produced in the first years of their career in the 60's. With Barrett the band recorded a few singles and also the album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn in 1967, an absolute classic of British psychedelic rock. After leaving Pink Floyd he still recorded two solo albums: The Madcap Laughs and Barrett, both released in 1970. A compilation of studio outtakes, Opel, was released in 1988.

Violeta de Outono appeared in the 80's amid a great wave of Brazilian rock. With an accomplished 60's-styled psychedelic sound and remarkable compositions Violeta de Outono quickly became a cult band in Brazil. In their shows they always included classics of psychedelic rock as well as songs by Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd which were always requested by the band's faithful followers.Through the years the group considered the idea of performing a tribute, re-visiting Syd Barrett's work. Several shows were booked in 2006, where Violeta de Outono played most of Syd's classics including the outer-space trip of Interstellar Overdrive, the oniric world of Matilda Mother and Flaming, as well as the enigmatic songs from the solo albums The Madcap Laughs and Barrett.

This DVD documents a performance by Violeta de Outono paying tribute, in an absolutely competent and inspired manner, to the creative genius of Syd Barrett, a true exercise in psychedelia that shows how influential Syd's work still is. This performance was recorded on the last night of the tour (17/07/2006) at the SESI Theatre in São Paulo. Coincidentally, a few days before this performance came the news of Syd's passing, which turned the event into a historical and emotional experience not only for Syd's fans but also for the musicians in Violeta de Outono.

Violeta de Outono is: Fabio Golfetti - guitar and vocals, Gabriel Costa - bass, Fernando Cardoso - piano, organ and vocals, Claudio Souza - drums.

Reviews
Tribute gigs and bands have long been a moot point with the CRS, but if they could all be as good as this , there'd be no problem. When I found that a Brazilian was covering some of the most English of English Music, I must admit, I was a bit worried... but needlessly, as it turns out: here we have four super-talented musicians who have paid incredible attention to detail in reproducing at this 2006 gig the majority of the Piper At The Gates Of Dawn album...with stunningly accurate deliveries of the two 1967 hit singles, to boot. Much of the credit for this must go to the amazing Fabio Golfetti, whose voice sounds incredibly Barrett-like (very rarely do you notice his dialect), and whose guitar style has obviously been honed a la Syd, even down to his use of something resembling the much-fabled Zippo Lighter...
...They wisely steer clear of much of Syd's Psychosis-tonged solo material, although they do include 'No Good Trying', as well as a bonus rendition of 'Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun'. For all those who, back in 1967/68 were outraged at Floyd gigs by their reluctance to play theit hits, and their insistence on free-form-self-indulgence: THIS IS THE GIG YOU NEVER GOT!
