PHD was the coming together of two hugely experienced musicians Jim Diamond and Tony Hymas.

Both had enjoyed moderate to huge success as member of other bands. Jim Diamond had previously been the vocalist with British rock band Bandit who released two albums for Arista Records and Tony Hymas had been a member of the Jeff beck Group during Jeff’s popular late seventies fusion period recording and co writing tracks on Jeff’s 1980 album There and Back.

The self titled PHD album was originally issued in 1981 and was what is known in the business as a slow burner. The single from the album was released and received encouraging air time on radio in the UK but seemed to stall. However a few months later radio picked up on the single and it was re promoted sending it this time into the top ten of the singles chart/. The album was also re packaged and re promoted although effectively it was the same album in a different sleeve. Following the release of the album the band would go on to record one more album in the eighties before going their separate ways once more eventually re forming in the mid noughties

Ph.D Three is as the title suggests the third album to come from Tony Hymas and Jim Diamond under the name Ph.D. This album which began life in late 2006 will be the first album of new material from Ph.D for more than twenty five years and as such will be hotly anticipated by the cult fan base that the band have built up and reconnected with recently with the reissue of the bands first two albums
