Robert Calvert Biography
Robert Calvert was born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1945. When he was two years of age, his family settled in Margate, Kent. Moving to London's bohemian Ladbroke Grove/Portobello Road area, in the sixties, Robert became acquainted with Hawkwind, one of the atypical "underground" attractions.
Robert’s poetry readings became part of the group's act during the early 70s, before he joined as an official member of the band in 1972. It was Robert who wrote, and originally sang, ‘Silver Machine’, the U.K., Top 3 hit for Hawkwind, although by that point his vocal had been overdubbed. He left Hawkwind the following year to make his highly praised solo debut album ‘Captain Lockheed And The Starfighters’. Robert was joined on this recording by three members of Hawkwind, Dave Brock on guitar, Lemmy on bass and Simon King on drums, with ex-Pink Fairies Twink also on drums and Paul Rudolph on guitar. His second album 'Lucky Leif And The Longships’ also featured science-fiction writer Michael Moorcock and was produced by Brian Eno. Following his final departure from Hawkwind in 1979, Robert concentrated on his solo career and writing, releasing the albums ‘Freq’, ‘Test Tube Conceived’ and ‘Hype’, which was also published as a novel. Robert appeared to be preparing to join Hawkwind again when he died in 1988.
