Fish first came to the notice of music fans as the front man for neo progressive rock band Marillion. The band had secured a recording deal with EMI records in late 1982 and released their debut album Script For A Jesters Tear in 1983. The band through intense hard work had built up a strong and loyal following which pushed not only the albums but also the singles lifted from the albums into the charts. It was with the bands third album that things moved up a step. The album was called Misplaced Childhood and one side of the album was taken up with an extended piece, which gave the band a firm footing for a stage show, which was built around the suite of songs. The album was released in 1985 and between the albums release and the end of the world tour to promote that album in 1986 the band performed Misplaced Childhood numerous times.

Following the tour the band set about working on the follow up album, which duly appeared in 1987 entitled Clutching At Straws. Again the band toured in support of that album and following touring duties again began work on the proposed follow up. Unfortunately that follow up would not include Fish as the front man as a split had emerged between Fish and the rest of the band. Both ultimately went their separate ways with the debut album from Fish, Vigil In A Wilderness Of Mirrors eventually being released in early 1990 followed by regular albums and concert appearances up to the present day.

13th Star is the latest studio offering from Fish and was written and recorded during what was one of the biggest personal upheavals in Fish’s life. The album is a dark and reflective album although there is an optimism running throughout the album. The material from the album was premiered during the lengthy European tour to promote the album that stretched from late summer through to early December 2007 and the tracks Circle Line, Square Go, Manchmal and Dark Star will already be familiar to people who saw Fish on tour. In addition to the tour to promote the album which was produced by Calum Malcolm.  Fish recorded a lengthy interview featuring the album for download as a podcast. The artwork for the album was designed by long time collaborator Mark Wilkinson.
